Writer Lee Kang of 'Our Unwritten Seoul,' starring Park Bo-young, is intriguing audiences by sharing the behind-the-scenes story of the script.
The new tvN Saturday-Sunday drama 'Our Unwritten Seoul' (written by Lee Kang / directed by Park Shin-woo / planned by Studio Dragon / produced by Monster Union and High Ground), which will premiere on the night of the 24th (Saturday) at 9:20 p.m., is a romantic growth drama about twin sisters who, apart from their appearances, find true love and life through a lie.
Writer Lee Kang, who left a poignant impression with 'Youth of May,' which depicted the painful stories of young people shaken by the era, is garnering attention as they present their next work after four years. Lee Kang noted, "I have been writing 'Our Unwritten Seoul' steadily like a letter or a diary, wanting to reach the viewers quickly, and it is finally about to be broadcasted," expressing excitement.
This time, through 'Our Unwritten Seoul,' Lee Kang, who wanted to write about "people who outwardly appear fine but are already struggling and weary inside," stated, "I imagined that I would like a twin who looks just like me to replace me, and suddenly I wondered if that twin's life would indeed be more peaceful than mine," sharing how they came up with the theme of life-changing twins.
Continued, "Everyone feels that their own life is the hardest, but I thought that maybe each person is fighting their own battles. I began this story with that in mind," and added, "Self-hatred, which whips and undermines oneself with feelings and thoughts one wouldn't even share with others, seems to be my oldest enemy and a homework that I still haven't fully resolved. I wrote with the hope that our protagonists and the viewers of this story can be a bit more generous toward themselves."
Regarding the main backdrop of the narrative, Seoul and Duso-ri, Lee Kang stated they wanted to depict these places as spaces that exist in different forms in each character's heart, breaking away from the binary framework of a bleak city and a leisurely hometown. "Seoul and Duso-ri in our drama will be portrayed through the perspectives of Yoo Mi-ji and Yoo Mi-rae," they noted, increasing curiosity.
'Our Unwritten Seoul' is currently attracting attention for its unique combination of actor Park Bo-young (playing Yoo Mi-ji and Yoo Mi-rae) taking on four roles, along with Park Jin-young (playing Lee Ho-su) and Ryu Kyung-soo (playing Han Se-jin). Lee Kang expressed, "I was very pleased when I heard about the casting news, but when I actually met the actors, it felt as if I encountered the characters in the work, which was both amazing and exciting."
Furthermore, Lee Kang commented, "Every time I see the characters brought to life by the actors on set and in the footage, they are much more vibrant and clear than the characters on the script, and I was amazed that the actors seem to understand the characters better than I do. The different kinds of charm created by the three actors will surely bring joy to the viewers."
'Our Unwritten Seoul' is promising a warm message of comfort from Lee Kang for those who are still growing, regardless of age and location, adding to the intrigue.
The new tvN drama 'Our Unwritten Seoul,' completed with Lee Kang's kind sincerity, which hopes to be a small comfort for everyone's weary hearts, will premiere on the night of the 24th (Saturday) at 9:20 p.m.
