Actor Oh Dae-hwan shared insights from filming, which received positive reviews, for the role of Company Commander Jo Baek-ho in 'New Recruit 3'.
Oh Dae-hwan played the role of Company Commander Jo Baek-ho in the Genie TV original 'New Recruit 3' (written by Yoon Gi-young and Kang Go-eun, directed by Min Jin-ki and Jo Jee-wook), which ended on the 29th of last month.
The 'New Recruit' series is a drama adapted from the homonymous animation by Jang Pi-jju. It has received praise for its realistic yet delightful depiction of military life in the barracks with unpredictable new recruits, presented in various episodic formats. Following the successful first season in 2022, the second season aired in 2023, and recently, the third season successfully met viewers.
Among them, Oh Dae-hwan played the new character Company Commander Jo Baek-ho, introduced in 'New Recruit 3'. Jo Baek-ho is an emotionally expressive commander full of love, which is rare in the military, and received positive reviews not only from the soldiers in the story but also from the audience. Oh Dae-hwan skillfully brought to life Jo Baek-ho's characteristic "pass" with a charming and generous portrayal. He also impressed viewers with a scene demonstrating firearm assembly for the soldiers.
In this context, he noted, "The gestures I showed while performing the 'pass' were because Jo Baek-ho is the new commander, and for the soldiers, I might be a stranger, so I thought about how to approach them more friendly." He also explained, "As a commander, I wanted to be like an older brother and treat the soldiers like younger siblings, and in some ways, it felt like being an uncle. While preparing for the role of Company Commander Jo Baek-ho, I thought about who among my acquaintances would give me a similar feeling, and I recalled the (senior) actors to shape the character."
He also mentioned, "I remember practicing firearm assembly for over an hour because it didn't come naturally to me. Since I'm a cook, I would be more confident cooking sides for hundreds of people with a ladle rather than practicing firearm assembly, which I struggled with, so I practiced diligently."
"I was a cook, but there weren't many new recruits, so I was the youngest until I became a corporal," he stated. "I have many memories of hardships. Nevertheless, the seniors, juniors, and officers I spent time with during my military service have all become fond memories over time, and I miss them. While working on this project, I suddenly felt a deep sense of nostalgia."
'New Recruit 3' consists of a total of 16 episodes and was released on TVing.
