In 'Brave Detectives 4,' the struggles of detectives to uncover the truth behind violent crimes unfolded.
In the 32nd episode of T-Cast E Channel's 'Brave Detectives 4' (directed by Lee Ji-sun), aired on the 2nd, Jeonnam Police Agency educational department Inspector Lim Wook-seob and Jeju Police Agency forensic department Inspector Lee Chang-yong, along with former Commissioner Yoon Wae-chul and Inspector Kim Jin-soo of the Forensic Investigation Team (KCSI), featured grants and presented case logs they directly solved.
The first case introduced that day began with an urgent report of a person collapsed on the roadside. The body was found inside a waterproof tarp in an alley densely populated with manufacturing companies, and the victim was a woman in her late 20s with a small build. She was wearing a size 115 (XXL) vest jumper, and her arms were bound with a clothesline, bent back behind her. There were bruises on her face, and a blue rubber glove was found in her mouth. It was confirmed that the victim's brother had reported her missing a month prior.
The autopsy revealed the cause of death was suffocation due to pressure on the neck. Male DNA was detected, and signs of a post-mortem sexual assault and self-harm were also confirmed, shocking investigators. The investigation team secured DNA from nearby men while tracking clues one by one. They first verified purchaser information at the supermarket that sold the vest jumper, revealing that the blue rubber gloves were used exclusively at a particular shipyard. The clothesline was identical to one found in the room of a man named Park, who lived directly across from the victim's house. Park, who stood 185 cm tall and had a large build, claimed he did not know the victim, but he had taken an unexcused absence the day after the estimated crime date, and records confirmed his employment at the shipyard and his purchase of the vest.
Park claimed he had to commit robbery because he had no money to buy rice and impulsively committed the crime. He pressed hard on her mouth and neck and recognized her death long after trying to dispose of the body but asserted he did not commit any heinous acts. Blood stains were detected at Park's house, which was preoccupied only with his self-defense. DNA from the clothesline that bound the victim's arms matched that of Park, as did the DNA found in the victim's body. Park was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The second case introduced by KCSI was with 15-year veteran blood analyst Inspector Lee Chang-yong. This incident occurred on the second floor of a residence, where blood spattered from the internal stairs to the street, prompting the urgent dispatch of the inspector to the scene. The victim was a man in his 60s living in the house, and according to his son, the father was found bleeding in the living room with a weapon lodged in his body while the assailant was searching for another knife in the kitchen. The height of the blood traces suggested that the first attack occurred while the victim was sitting up in bed.
The assailant was a longtime acquaintance of the victim and a repeat offender with 14 criminal charges, including two for attempted murder. He had previously committed a crime due to suspicions about his girlfriend's infidelity. According to the victim, who was transported from the scene, the assailant said he had also killed his girlfriend. The police immediately dispatched to his residence. The woman's body was found wet in the bathroom. Though the assailant had cleaned the crime scene thoroughly, he could not erase all evidence. The initial attack was confirmed to occur in the kitchen, and there were splatter marks left on the wall where a bloody weapon had been swung. The height of the blood suggested that the victim was attacked while sitting under the dining table. At that time, the assailant called the police station, stating he would confess and instructed them to come find him in a park. He claimed he wanted to die after consuming poison, but was actually chewing on harmless grass.
He stated that he was angry and impulsively killed his girlfriend after suspecting her of secretly meeting with an acquaintance. However, investigations revealed that the victims had no relationship at all. During the prosecution investigation, he changed his statement, saying that the girlfriend had put the knife to her own neck and that it was an accident during a struggle. However, the blood spatter contradicted his claims. The 'stopping spatter' created during the moment the knife was swung and stopped proved the assailant's attack and showed signs of the victim's resistance. As a result, the assailant was sentenced to life in prison.
