The first childbirth relay variety show in Korea, TV CHOSUN's 'Our Baby Has Been Born,' features MC Yang Se-hyung joining as a 'father-to-be.' He said, "I’m learning new things from pregnancy to childbirth, and I think there will be many more points to learn as we continue filming."
The new TV CHOSUN entertainment program 'Our Baby Has Been Born' (directed by Lee Seung-hoon and Kim Joon/written by Jang Joo-yeon), which will air its first episode on May 9 (Friday) at 10 p.m., is the first childbirth relay variety show in Korea that shares the touching moments while accompanying the noble journey of childbirth. Yang Se-hyung, who joined Park Soo-hong on the childbirth scene, said, "If my senior Park Soo-hong is the 'fairy of safe delivery,' then I am a 'fairy of safe delivery in training,'" promising to ask many questions from the perspective of an unmarried 'expectant father' and learn as much as possible. Below is a Q&A with Yang Se-hyung, who wants to follow in Park Soo-hong's footsteps as the 'fairy of safe delivery.'
1. What was the first thought that came to mind when you received the offer to appear on 'Our Baby Has Been Born'? I'm curious about your reason for deciding to participate.
- I’m not married and I don’t have a baby. So when I received the offer to appear, I thought, 'Isn’t it someone who knows a lot about babies that should appear?' and 'Did they get the wrong person?' However, after hearing the explanation about the program, I realized that someone like me, who doesn’t know much, might ask questions that someone who knows everything wouldn’t. Also, I will eventually have a child, though I don’t know when that will be. With that in mind, it seems like I could study in advance because most new dads find it challenging to study hastily. I believe that by asking questions from the perspective of many expectant fathers, I can help myself and also provide assistance to expectant parents.
2. You have seen several births while filming; has it been helpful?
- First of all, I've learned so many new facts. I learned about the processes from pregnancy to childbirth, what to do and what to be careful about when pregnant, and what to do when certain problems arise. While I don't know much, meeting actual mothers has been very helpful. And I feel like I have a lot more to learn as we continue filming. At first, I thought, 'It’s simple; you just get pregnant and give birth!' But childbirth isn’t an ordinary matter. Watching the childbirth scene made me think a lot about my mother. It became an opportunity to indirectly feel what pains and worries she must have had when she gave birth to me.
3. They say only women can talk about childbirth, but both MCs happen to be men. Are you okay discussing childbirth? I’m curious about your mindset in preparing for this.
- In reality, childbirth is the effort of two men and women who love each other, and it requires their mutual agreement to have a child. These days, it’s difficult to have a baby. It’s not only an economic issue but also a matter of women not being able to conceive easily. While childbirth is for the mother, fathers also want to provide continuous support. I think we are filming to represent that feeling, and as we learn more about these issues, men can sufficiently empathize and understand them. The empathy that men feel is different from that of women. Therefore, if we can tell from the perspective of fathers and expectant fathers, wouldn’t it create a more beautiful world? (laughs)
4. How do you feel participating in the childbirth process while filming?
- When the cesarean section was being performed, my senior Park Soo-hong and I waited right outside the operating room. Watching the mother go in, we prayed together. As we talked with the mother and her husband about various happy and sad stories before she entered the operating room, I felt as if I were an uncle, even though the child isn’t mine. However, childbirth isn’t the end. After children are born, I’m very curious about how they grow up. So, I separately contact the producer to ask how the baby is doing and if they’re growing well.
5. Please explain your role in the program and your character.
- My senior Park Soo-hong is a dad who has experienced childbirth, while I am a bachelor who is not married. So if my senior Park Soo-hong is the fairy of safe delivery, then my character is more like a candidate to become the fairy of safe delivery?! 'Fairy of safe delivery in training.' Since I'm a beginner, I tend to ask a lot of questions. There are times when Park Soo-hong, the fairy of safe delivery, gets very excited while experiencing the childbirth process. At that moment, I play the role of a secretary under the fairy of safe delivery, calming him down.
6. Please share one must-watch point while viewing the program and say something to the viewers.
- There are urgent situations occurring during the childbirth process, and it would be good for viewers to hold hands and cheer. Cheering not only gives energy but also makes the cheerers feel good when things go well. I hope viewers can enjoy watching our program together and feel good. Also, we never know when the baby will be born or what urgent situation might happen. That’s why our program is filmed 'all-day'! It doesn’t follow the usual filming schedule of starting and ending at specific times. Once, I received a call about a truly urgent situation. So while I was going to meet with members of a cycling club, I suddenly had to dash to the hospital on the subway after dropping my bike since a baby was being born. Especially, I learned this time that many people don’t know that babies should be born at certain weeks and need to weigh certain grams at birth. It’s a great program to learn interesting things about these matters. Nowadays, many people choose not to have children and live a DINKS lifestyle or even avoid marriage altogether. I believe this program can make a positive impact in such circumstances. I hope our touching moments are well conveyed.
