An individual who has adapted to life in South Korea for 14 years since defecting from North Korea appears on 'Ask Us Anything Fortune Teller.'
In the episode airing tonight (28th) at 8:30 p.m. on KBS Joy, 'Ask Us Anything Fortune Teller' episode 314 features a person who previously worked as a defector broker and escaped from North Korea to avoid a wanted notice.
He shares that he recently appeared on a cooking survival program and has been troubled by negative comments calling him a 'stubborn villain,' which has led to a crisis of identity.
He mentioned that while helping his father, who was involved in earning foreign currency in North Korea, he had many exchanges with China. After being asked for help, he began to assist North Korean residents by visiting their homes, starting the defection with a sense of mission to 'save people.' He states that he became a broker who helped more than 100 families defect.
The fortune tellers were curious about the defection process and explained, "It is only possible if there are people to accept those who have crossed over not only from North Korea but also from China," adding, "Defection occurs by using shallow areas of the Tumen River."
As the defector population increased, a wanted notice was issued, prompting him to defect with his father while leaving his mother and younger brother behind, who were under siege.
When he first arrived in South Korea, he thought communication would be easy, but due to unexpected foreign words, he could not even understand the phrase 'the water is self-service,' leading to various trials and mistakes as he settled in.
Consequently, in situations where he had to make judgments for himself, his stubbornness increased. He met a fellow defector wife, who also cooked in Pyongyang, and began running a restaurant; he accidentally had the opportunity to participate in a cooking competition.
Unexpected team missions began to create conflicts of opinion, and due to his strong manner of speaking, misunderstandings accumulated, leading to the moniker 'stubborn.' He explains that after being labeled a villain for sticking to his own methods, even guests who had not visited since the broadcast began giving negative reviews to his restaurant.
In response, Seo Jang-hoon noted, "Didn’t you cross over the Baekdu Mountain to avoid execution?" advising, "This is not the time to worry about negative comments" and added, "It will disappear after some time." Lee Soo-geun also told him, "Focus on menu development with the original intention you had when you defected."
His life-threatening defection story and behind-the-scenes of the cooking competition program can be found tonight (28th) at 8:30 p.m. on KBS Joy 'Ask Us Anything Fortune Teller' episode 313.
