Kim Sung-cheol from "The Old Woman with the Knife" showed a humble attitude toward the nickname "musical idol."
An interview with lead actor Kim Sung-cheol of the film "The Old Woman with the Knife" was conducted at a café located in Sokgyeok-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of the 28th.
"The Old Woman with the Knife" is an action drama that portrays the intense confrontation between a legendary killer, Jojak (played by Lee Hye-young), who has been active for over 40 years in an organization that handles cockroach-like humans, and a mysterious killer, Tu-woo (played by Kim Sung-cheol), who has pursued him his entire life. It is the first directorial comeback in four years for director Min Kyu-dong, who traversed various genres such as "Herstory," "Everything About My Wife," and "Horror High Tale: Second Story." Earlier, it garnered global attention through its world premiere at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival and caught eyes with news of its official invitations to the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival and the Beijing International Film Festival.
Lee Hye-young plays the legendary killer Jojak, Kim Sung-cheol plays the mysterious rookie killer Tu-woo, Shin Si A portrays Jojak's childhood, Kim Mu-yeol plays Jojak's mentor Ryu, Yeon Woo-jin is the director of the veterinary clinic connected to Jojak, Kim Kang-woo plays the head of the Sacred Prevention Agency, who catches bugs and saves the sick, and Ok Ja-yeon plays the practitioner Choe-yeop of Sacred Prevention Agency. Notably, after the film, Kim Sung-cheol even sang the OST that plays during the end credits.
Regarding the process of singing the OST, he noted, "The director said he thought of me from the beginning of filming, but didn’t tell me. When it was invited to the Berlin Film Festival, there was no OST, and he told me about it a week before the press conference. I said, 'Me singing the OST for "The Old Woman with the Knife"? I don't think it fits.' (laughs) But when he played the song made with the music director, it was good. I said I was scared, but in the end, I went with trust. Just with trust," which brought laughter.
He continued, "The OST recording finished in just two hours. We recorded in a small studio in Hapjeong-dong, but I thought there would be only 2 to 3 people. However, over 10 people came, including the film production team, the promotion team, and our company staff. At that time, it was really tough," he laughed.
Currently, Kim Sung-cheol is receiving love calls not only for films and dramas but also for musicals such as "Jekyll and Hyde," "The Count of Monte Cristo," "Death Note," and "Shakespeare in Love," being referred to as a "musical idol."
He expressed gratitude, saying, "I’m so thankful to the fans, and I find it fascinating, 'Why do they like me?' I asked the teenagers, ‘Why do you like me?’ There are many young and handsome celebrities, but an old man...(laughs) When I say that, the fans respond, 'No!' It's really nice that the fans love me. It’s wonderful to see someone who passionately likes someone."
Regarding the title "musical idol," he said, "I’m not it. That kind of thing has disappeared now," but he expressed gratitude, saying, "I'm really thankful that (the tickets sell well)."
Meanwhile, "The Old Woman with the Knife" is set to be released on the 30th.
