Who created the pink hanbok worn by actress Moon So-ri in the Netflix drama "When Life Gives You Tangerines," which left a deep impression and resonance with viewers? It is none other than designer Lee Il-sun.

Designer Lee Il-sun, known as a hanbok artisan, stated, "Thirty years ago, floral embroidery was in vogue," and added, "I designed the pink hanbok with delicate flowers embroidered on it to suit the drama's storyline. It was produced to match an era that can evoke nostalgia. I am grateful that Moon So-ri portrayed the mother fittingly and elegantly.

Designer Lee Il-sun has established "Geumdanje" and has walked the same path for 30 years, earning her recognition as a master of traditional hanbok in South Korea. She has showcased traditional hanbok in dozens of dramas and films, including the movies "The King’s Case Note," "Like a Butterfly," "The Royal Concierge," Netflix's "Kingdom: Ashin of the North," and the KBS drama "Red Heart of the Tide."

She is also fulfilling a role as a cultural diplomatic envoy, traveling to major overseas countries. In 2022, to commemorate the 140th anniversary of Korea-U.S. diplomatic relations, she successfully presented a hanbok fashion show at the Korean Consulate General in Seattle. In 2024, she showcased the beauty of hanbok to the world in Italy, known as the home of fashion. At the fashion show held in Rome, commemorating the 140th anniversary of Korea-Italy diplomatic relations and the 2024-2025 Korea-Italy cultural exchange year, she received high praise for presenting an "indescribable beauty."

In addition to traditional hanbok, she is also contributing to the creation of costumes that modernly showcase the beauty of Korean culture. In 2023, she received acclaim for collaborating with designer Jang Ha-eun of the fashion design brand "OUWR," which created the four black hanboks worn by BLACKPINK at Coachella. CNN highlighted the outfits worn by BLACKPINK with the headline that it would "go down in history."

Designer Lee Il-sun remarked, "If there is an opportunity to promote the beauty of hanbok and the elegance of our tradition, I will gladly rush to it anytime."
