The delightful culinary journey of 'Edward's Country Cook' has come to an end.
On the 18th, the tvN show 'Edward's Country Cook' (directed by Kim Kwan-tae) concluded, where the country cooks set off to find seasonal ingredients and dishes from Korea, experiencing hand-made flavors and warm sentiments that no seasoning could imitate, adding a memorable page to their unforgettable memories.
First, Edward, along with Byun Yo-han, Go Ah-sung, and Shin Si A, caught attention by encountering various ingredients in Gangwon-do, Andong, and Yeosu. In Gangwon-do, they tasted giant octopus and yellow corvina, buckwheat, dried pollack, and mountain herbs; in Andong, strawberries, Andong braised chicken, and mackerel; and in Yeosu, marinated crab, mugwort dessert, grilled eel, and mustard greens.
Additionally, drawing inspiration from experiences in each region, Edward showcased creative dishes that evoked admiration. The 'CIAAT' (seed) seasoned calamari, grilled without water and served with a seasoning chimichurri sauce containing fermented fish sauce, 'Do You Like Miso Chicken' boiled with doenjang, soy milk, chicken, finished with pine nuts, and fusion hotteok accompanied with strawberry sauce featured brilliant ideas that intrigued.
During the journey, the country cooks not only shared meals but also connected with warm-hearted people. Particularly during their visit to the village of Hakgasan, Edward and the others felt the flavors of home as they enjoyed a lavish meal consisting of seasoned soybean paste stew and rice prepared by the grandmothers, as well as pork boiled in a cauldron, moving viewers to tears with a sense of nostalgia. Edward also gifted handmade burgers with bacon jam as a special treat for the grandmothers, enhancing the warmth of the experience.
Moreover, they made gnocchi from Gangwon-do potatoes and held a cooking class where they created American-style braised mustard greens from Yeosu mustard greens, bringing joy. With Edward taking on the role of teacher, Byun Yo-han, Go Ah-sung, and Shin Si A helped the elderly and taught them recipes to enjoy familiar ingredients in new ways.
The cheerful and curious Edward, along with his supportive brother Byun Yo-han, meticulous Go Ah-sung, and the mukbang champion 'Mukshia' Shin Si A, showcased a variety of personalities, and the relationships among the members grew closer day by day, bringing joy. Additionally, the country cooks revealed a delightful chemistry with guests Yoon Doo-joon and Bae Jung-nam.
Meanwhile, in the final episode, Edward prepared unique recipes using the ingredients that captured ideas and memories gained during this journey. For the special last meal, Byun Yo-han, Go Ah-sung, and Shin Si A, who had improved their cooking skills throughout the trip, took charge of making buckwheat noodles, mugwort abalone dumplings, and seven-layer rice cake, completing the dishes together with Edward.
The final banquet evoked fantastic flavors and memories of the journey while capturing emotions. Edward remarked, “When I was young, I felt 90% American and 10% Korean. As this journey comes to an end, I think I might be 70% Korean and 30% American.”
On the other hand, Byun Yo-han expressed, “I felt as though I was filling the time I missed by cooking dishes I couldn’t eat on the first day with my brother. I was really grateful for that.” Go Ah-sung said, “I really didn’t like fruit in cooking. However, I think the chef completely shattered my prejudice,” and Shin Si A shared, “Whether it’s a failure or success, that’s all part of the process. I feel like I learned how to enjoy the process of cooking.”
In this way, offering healing on Friday nights while exploring the tastes and culture of Korea, tvN's 'Edward's Country Cook' concluded on the 18th.
