Rami Malek, 'Amateur,' confessed that he received lessons and influences from Korean films.
On the morning of the 9th, an online press conference for the film 'Amateur' was held via video link. Leading actor Rami Malek, director James Hawes, and others attended.
'Amateur' (directed by James Hawes, distributed by Walt Disney Company Korea) is an intelligent spy thriller about CIA codebreaker Charlie Heller (played by Rami Malek), who, with no field experience, takes on a large terrorist organization using his exceptional intellect and skills to avenge his murdered wife. This film features intelligent action set in locations around the world, including London, Paris, Madrid, and Istanbul, as well as chase scenes that mobilize drones, helicopters, and boats, providing audiences with a rich viewing experience.
Rami Malek played the role of CIA codebreaker Charlie Heller, who carries out missions to avenge his wife's death.
Rami Malek gained worldwide fame for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury of the legendary rock group Queen in the 2018 film 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and made headlines the following year when he received his first Academy Award for Best Actor at the 91st Academy Awards. 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was a box office hit, surpassing 9.94 million admissions in South Korea.
Regarding his impression of the film's release in Korea, Rami Malek said, "It is an incredibly proud and moving moment. (Today) you will be able to see it first in Korea," adding, "This film has learned a lot from Korean cinema to create this wonderful genre film. I hope the audience will watch and see if it was well made and if it suits their tastes." The director also noted, "I can't hide my joy on the release day."
Rami Malek stated about his character, "Personally, I have always challenged the typical hero in my career. If there are stereotypes and molds, as an artist, my goal is to break those molds. When choosing my next project, I have chosen with careful thought and intention rather than for income. For this film, I thought about how the spy genre could connect with the audience. It started with the desire to see how someone who was unnoticed by others could appear extraordinary."
Meanwhile, 'Amateur' was released in domestic theaters on the 9th.
