Director Bong Joon-ho's new film 'Mickey 17' has exited after completing its screen run in North America just a month after its release.
On July 7, local time in the United States, 'Mickey 17' will be available on major OTT platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango. This decision comes about a month after its global release on June 7.
'Mickey 17' (screenplay and directed by Bong Joon-ho, produced by Plan B Entertainment, distributed by Warner Bros. Korea) follows Mickey (played by Robert Pattinson), an expendable sent on dangerous missions, who faces his 17th death crisis. During this time, believing he is dead, Mickey 18 (also played by Robert Pattinson) is printed, leading to an unpredictable storyline.
'Mickey 17' was first released in South Korea on Feb. 28 and became globally available on June 7.
'Mickey 17' generated $19.1 million (about 27.7 billion won) in ticket sales from 3,807 theaters in North America between its release on July 7 and July 9, taking the top spot, but analysts noted that the box office revenue in its opening week fell short of expectations, making it difficult to recoup the substantial production expense and marketing costs.
Initially, the production expense for 'Mickey 17' was $118 million (171 billion won), and to achieve revenue, it was estimated that about $275 million to $300 million (398.6 billion to 430 billion won) would be needed at the global box office.
In the end, 'Mickey 17' earned approximately $45.2 million (about 66.4 billion won) in North America and $77.7 million (about 114.1 billion won) in other regions, totaling $122.9 million (about 180.6 billion won), resulting in a disappointing outcome.
The industry particularly notes that global ticket sales for 'Mickey 17' are expected to be about $143 million (about 209 billion won), and in this case, estimates indicate the film's loss could amount to about $80 million (about 116.9 billion won), drawing attention.
