Disney stopped the live-action remake of the animated hit 'Tangled' after 'Snow White' failed to perform well at the box office.
According to Page Six on the 4th (local time), a studio official noted that despite having already hired Michael Gracey, the director of 'The Greatest Showman,' the executives temporarily paused the film's production.
So far, this project has been moving forward with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, co-writer of 'Thor: Love and Thunder,' working on the script. The 'Tangled' film was in pre-production, and the executives began searching for actors, but the process was suddenly halted.
Disney's decision was influenced by the box office failure of the live-action remake of 'Snow White,' which was released on March 21.
The studio spent $270 million to produce and promote 'Snow White,' starring Rachel Zegler, but it only earned $70 million in the United States and $146 million worldwide.
'Snow White' was embroiled in controversy from its release. There was backlash over Zegler's casting as the lead due to racial issues, as well as the decision to create the dwarfs using computer-generated imagery instead of using real actors.
Zegler criticized the original 1937 animated film, calling it 'strange' and 'outdated,' further fueling the controversy. She also joked that the prince 'literally chases' Snow White.
He faced criticism from Disney for mixing his political opinions with the film's promotion online. Disney decided to scale back the premiere's size and proposed that only photographers, not the media, attend the red carpet.
The studio received praise for bringing back films it had previously stored, even though 'Mufasa: The Lion King' grossed $720 million worldwide and 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Aladdin' each earned $1.263 billion and $1 billion in revenue, respectively.
However, Disney is already planning to release live-action remakes of 'Lilo and Stitch' and 'Moana' within the year. Audiences are likely to make decisions about the future of the 'Tangled' remake based on their reactions to those films.
