In "When Life Gives You Tangerines," actress Yeom Hye-ran, who played a Haenyeo from Jeju Island, is set to also shine in the film "My Name Is," which deals with the Jeju 4.3 Incident.

On the 3rd, the production team of "My Name Is" (directed by Jeong Ji-young, provided by My Name Is Cultural Industry Company, produced by Let's Film Aurapictures) announced the start of filming.

"My Name Is" explores how the scars from the 1948 Jeju 4.3 Incident manifest themselves in the tumult and pain of the democratization process of the 1980s, ultimately revealing their form in 1998 and seeking to understand how they connect with future generations in 2025. This film, a winner of a screenplay contest co-hosted by the Jeju 4.3 Peace Foundation and the Jeju International Free City Development Center (JDC), is directed by Jeong Ji-young, who has previously exposed the absurdities of vested interests in our society through works such as "Broken Arrow," "Black Money," and "Boys."

In particular, the film has raised expectations as actress Yeom Hye-ran plays the leading role of Jeong-soon. Yeom Hye-ran has previously expanded the scope of female characters with films like "Citizen Deok-hee" and dramas such as "The Glory" and "Mask Girl." Furthermore, she recently portrayed Kwang-lye, the mother of Aesoon (IU, Moon So-ri), in the popular Netflix original series "When Life Gives You Tangerines," showcasing the bittersweet life of a Haenyeo from Jeju Island. This raises anticipation for how Yeom Hye-ran will depict Jeong-soon, who carries the pain of the Jeju 4.3 Incident, in "My Name Is."

Before the official start of filming, on the 1st, director Jeong Ji-young and the commissioners of the "My Name Is" production committee paid their respects to the spirits of the 4.3 Incident at the Jeju 4.3 Peace Park and commenced their filming schedule. Subsequently, on the 2nd, they sketched a memorial ceremony held at the Jeju 4.3 History Museum in a detention center, and today (the 3rd), they moved forward with the first filming scene featuring the crank-in and commemoration ceremony.

"My Name Is" focuses on the painful history of the Jeju 4.3 Incident, which cuts through the modern history of our oppression and searches for the proper name of the Jeju 4.3 Incident, leaving behind the distorted and disparaged past where those who were sacrificed under a state of emergency in Jeju 76 years ago were wronged. It is set to be filmed across various locations in Jeju, including Seogwipo, Hallim, Jocheon, Seongsan, and Daejeong, with some scenes shot at film sets around Seoul to perfectly reenact the atmosphere of Jeju in 1998. Director Jeong Ji-young noted, "We plan to film the 1948-49 backgrounds at Pyoseon Folk Village and portray Jeju's representative landscapes as much as possible against the barley fields of Ora-dong."

Additionally, the production team is pursuing various collaborations to fully capture the sentiments of the residents of Jeju starting from the film's launch event in Jeju. Previously, "My Name Is" conducted a crowdfunding campaign on Tumblbug titled "Seeking the Name of the 4.3 Incident," achieving 940% of its goal and recording the highest crowdfunding for a feature film in Tumblbug's history.

Furthermore, a memorandum of understanding was signed with Jeju MBC for successful film production, and planning programs and campaigns related to individuals connected to the 4.3 Incident are underway with director Jeong Ji-young and the cast. In the released video, the film's protagonist, Yeom Hye-ran, appealed to potential audience members to draw attention.

The "My Name Is" team stated that filming will commence today with the goal of continuing until June and aiming for a release during the 4.3 week in 2026. Director Jeong Ji-young expressed, "I hope that the film 'My Name Is' will be a starting point for finding the true name of the 4.3 Incident," and requested much interest and support.
