When Life Gives You Tangerines, Kang Yoo-seok succeeded.
The Netflix series When Life Gives You Tangerines has been generating buzz with all episodes released up to the final episode, and there has been a flood of praise for Kang Yoo-seok, who perfectly portrayed the main narrative of Act 4.
Kang Yoo-seok plays Eun-myeong, the second son of Ae-soon (played by Moon So-ri) and Kwan-sik (played by Park Hae-jun), and the younger brother of Geum-myeong (played by IU), drawing interest with a completely different charm from his model student sister. In particular, he enriched the drama by gradually revealing Eun-myeong's hidden wounds through meaningful rebellion.
In the early part of Act 4, Kang Yoo-seok centered the story from Eun-myeong's perspective. Eun-myeong (played by Kang Yoo-seok) ended up in a detention center after taking the blame for a friend who ran a pawnshop with him. In the horrific situation, he first expressed the wounds suffered from the discrimination against him by his sister, creating deep sympathy as he resented Ae-soon and Kwan-sik. In this process, Eun-myeong's plan to earn a lot of money in a way different from Geum-myeong’s, in hopes of rewarding his parents’ love, stirred everyone's hearts.
Later, Eun-myeong secretly started a glutinous rice cake business to regain his father's belly he had sold off. Kwan-sik, who heard about this from Hyun-sook (played by Lee Soo-kyung), bought glutinous rice cakes with his own money to distribute to apartment residents, encouraging Eun-myeong.
Eun-myeong, who caught on to all the facts, boarded a deep-sea fishing boat to make big money but was ultimately caught by Kwan-sik and Bwoo-sang-gil (played by Choi Dae-hoon), placing him at the center of the key developments. Through this, Eun-myeong and his parents came to feel the value of each other again.
The father-son relationship between Eun-myeong and Kwan-sik brought tears to the audience's eyes. After being discharged, Eun-myeong secretly wiped his tears while seeing his noticeably thinner father and belatedly realized Kwan-sik's boundless love he had shown him. Through these moments, the story's emotion climbed to its peak.
Kang Yoo-seok immersed himself deeply in the character of Eun-myeong. Thanks to this, he delicately portrayed the character's inner depth and poured out the emotions he felt in an engaging manner. He skillfully expressed the complex psychology of the character, eliciting sympathy from viewers, as well as creating a richly nuanced character by beautifully developing his internal depth. Kang Yoo-seok's excellent control of pacing shone through, leaving a heavy resonance in viewers' homes.
Kang Yoo-seok's diverse activities were full of surprises. From his resemblance to his father Kwan-sik and mother Ae-soon to the realistic sibling chemistry he created with sister Geum-myeong, he deliciously expressed the charm of Eun-myeong, bringing smiles. Moreover, he amplified the fun with an unexpected romantic storyline with Hyun-sook, who became a crucial part of the story.
Additionally, as he gradually grows while feeling the weight of being a breadwinner, the narrative of the 'growth character' Eun-myeong garners support from viewers and spreads affection for the character. This is largely thanks to Kang Yoo-seok's perfect performance.
In this way, Kang Yoo-seok created another life character named Yang Eun-myeong by appropriately combining humor and seriousness. Through When Life Gives You Tangerines, he once again engraved his name in the industry and continues his fast-paced career. Kang Yoo-seok is set to race like a trending actor with tvN's Resident Playbook, which premieres on the 12th (Saturday), and 'Seocho-dong.' Anticipation grows for the new heights he will reach, as he consistently delivers performances that exceed expectations in every project.
