The reaction of a current lawyer watching Kim Soo-hyun's press conference is garnering attention.
On the 31st of last month, lawyer Lee Don-ho uploaded a new video titled "If I were him, I wouldn't have done this;; [A current lawyer's genuine reaction to Kim Soo-hyun's press conference]" on his YouTube channel. The video is a brief compilation of comments that the lawyer made while watching the live broadcast of Kim Soo-hyun's press conference.
Earlier that day, Kim Soo-hyun held a press conference at a hotel in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, addressing allegations that he had dated the late Kim Sae-ron during her minor years.
Kim Soo-hyun said, "The deceased and I dated for about a year, four years before 'Queen of Tears' aired, five years ago," and he stated that he had never dated her during her minor years. Lawyer Lee Don-ho advised, "A year? That can't be right. Why does he keep holding back? He should let it all go; now's the opportunity."
Kim Soo-hyun stated, "I became an actor and received an overwhelming amount of love. I was a person who didn't have much, but I ended up becoming someone with a lot to protect. Whenever the choice between human Kim Soo-hyun and star Kim Soo-hyun diverged, I always chose to act as star Kim Soo-hyun," to which lawyer Lee Don-ho repeatedly responded, "No, no," before pointing out, "That's not what the public is curious about. What the public really wants to know is not that internal conflict between human Kim Soo-hyun and star Kim Soo-hyun."
The lawyer remarked, "What we are curious about is whether he dated the minor Kim Sae-ron or had a fling with her, and the content of their KakaoTalk messages. If they weren't dating, why would he have sent such messages? He needs to clarify the disclosed KakaoTalk messages," adding, "This is a distraction. It’s about his struggles, the decisions he had to make, and asking the public to understand what's inside him."
In particular, as the lawyer denied the allegations that Kim Soo-hyun had a romantic relationship with the deceased during her minor years and also mentioned that the deceased made a tragic choice due to debt, he criticized, "He shouldn't imply that the deceased made that choice. If he does, this will continue. The public will ask, 'What about those messages?' If they dated for a year four years ago, he needs to explain what the evidence was from before that. It seems like this press conference is worse than not holding one at all; was he here to do that?"
He continued, "The public cannot definitively discern whether Kim Sae-ron felt pressure or not, and bringing up those false statements now deviates too far from the main issue."
Furthermore, when Kim Soo-hyun stated regarding the KakaoTalk messages disclosed so far, "There are lots of incorrect facts if one claims they were written by the deceased. The photo from 2016 is actually from 2019," lawyer Lee Don-ho questioned, "Are you claiming everything has been fabricated? Was everything taken in 2016 fabricated?" He expressed his doubts, saying, "Do not speak so vaguely. You can't just say, 'It's all a lie.' How can the public judge that?"
Additionally, regarding the lack of a Q&A session, the lawyer expressed frustration, saying, "You’re not taking any questions? You're stating you will clarify the truth through lawsuits? The key issue is that the KakaoTalk messages from 2016, when Kim Sae-ron was a minor, were seen by the entire nation. If the photos, videos, or messages were manipulated, the journalists should be allowed to question where the manipulations occurred. The public does not want this."
Moreover, lawyer Lee Don-ho addressed Kim Soo-hyun's legal responses, stating, "He hasn't clearly articulated what he's referring to and claims he will clarify in the future. Therefore, we must keep watching the results of Kim Soo-hyun's trial or investigation. Isn't that an excessive demand on the public?" He added, "What we want to know is what messages and recordings were manipulated and for them to explain the core evidence that has been submitted while answering reporters' questions. If he claims, 'I was stressed and burdened and will reveal all through lawsuits,' the public can't help but judge that he is 'actually unsure.'"
Finally, lawyer Lee Don-ho emphasized, "If he's going to provide verdicts or trial results later, then he should have taken one of two approaches: Either disclose everything in court or provide a defense regarding the key evidence that the public can accept. If he cries out, 'It's all a lie,' will 90% of the people feel empathy for that? I think there's no core. There is no substance. If he were my client, I wouldn't have done it that way."
Meanwhile, Kim Soo-hyun emphasized at the press conference that the claims made by the bereaved family regarding him dating Kim Sae-ron during her minor years are "not true," asserting that the KakaoTalk messages and videos presented by the Gaseyeon are fabricated. He stated, "To prove this, I submitted KakaoTalk conversations from 2016, 2018, and this year that I exchanged with acquaintances to a verification agency that analyzes scientific statements," adding, "The results concluded that the individuals in the 2016 and 2018 materials are not the same person."
Additionally, lawyer Kim Jong-bok, who attended alongside Kim Soo-hyun, stated during the press conference that they submitted a complaint against the bereaved family of the late Kim Sae-ron and the operators of 'Gaseyeon' for violations of the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection and defamation, and also filed a lawsuit seeking damages totaling 12 billion won at the Seoul Central District Court.
