(Following Interview ③) Actor Park Hae-joon, who delivered a stellar performance in "When Life Gives You Tangerines," discussed his synchronization with the character "Iron Man."
Netflix conducted an interview with Park Hae-joon, who starred in the original series "When Life Gives You Tangerines" (written by Lim Sang-chun, directed by Kim Won-seok) at a hotel located in Jangchung-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, on the morning of the 1st.
"When Life Gives You Tangerines" is a Netflix series that portrays the life filled with adventures of Ae-sun, a 'promising rebel' born in Jeju, and "Iron Man" Kwan-sik through the four seasons. In this series, Park Hae-joon portrays Kwan-sik's middle age and old age.
Director Kim Won-seok noted the reason for casting Park Hae-joon, saying, "We needed a genuinely kind person, and the kindest actor is Park Hae-joon, so we cast him." Park Hae-joon chuckled and said, "I think the director doesn't really know me." He continued, "I trust the director so much that no matter what role the director requests, there's a reason behind it. This might sound a bit like boasting, but I'm a diligent actor who does everything the director says, which may make me seem kind. Since I can be controlled easily."
He also emphasized, "I think it's because we trust each other a lot. I followed everything our director requested because we trust each other. And I can do it. Outside of the production, I might say, 'I'm not doing it,' but during acting, if he asks, 'How would you like me to do it?' I can digest that 100%. In fact, I don’t have any doubts. He gives such reasonable comments."
Kwan-sik, a father of this era, has a fantastic aspect. Park Hae-joon reflected, "While filming this, I really went through a lot of self-reflection. There are people who live honestly and diligently like this, and I have indirectly experienced how someone can love one woman so deeply, which has improved me a bit as I stepped into this character's realm. Yet it felt as if it belonged to a divine realm, which is nearly unreachable. Looking around, I found many fathers like that. When someone talks about their father, they aren’t entirely without flaws, but many people are very much like Kwan-sik."
In addition, he joked, "I thought it was fantastical. I grumbled, 'Where on earth is a father like this? It's ridiculous.' Still, I felt guilty about taking on this role." He then commented on the character's synchronization, saying, "I think I'm about 50% similar to Kwan-sik," adding, "My wife is so engaged with the drama that she told me, 'You have many sides like this.' I guess I might be a husband like that to my wife. I'm stingy to others. I'm somewhat stingy outside of family members."
So how did his two children react? Park Hae-joon said, "These kids don’t really watch my stuff. They watch briefly, then do their own things and turn it off. Not long ago, their mother asked to just watch one episode, so I showed them episode 13 or 14. I was outside, and then I got phone calls. They worried about whether Dad was okay while I was showing a painful scene. They called every 30 minutes to ask, 'Is dad okay?' It seems they were shown a snippet from Act 4. Because they kept worrying if dad was alright, I thought it wouldn’t be good to show them. My kids are in the 6th and 2nd grades, respectively."
