Creator Shin Won-ho is generating curiosity by sharing the behind-the-scenes work of “Resident Playbook.”
The new tvN weekend drama “Resident Playbook” (Creator Shin Won-ho, Lee Woo-jung / Director Lee Min-soo / Screenplay Kim Song-hee / Planning CJ ENM Studios / Production Egg is Coming), will premiere on April 12 (Saturday) and is a spinoff drama of “Hospital Playlist” showing the growth process of residents who dream of becoming wise doctors as they overcome their initial struggles.
Director Shin Won-ho, who received great love through the “Reply” series and the “Playlist” series, is drawing attention with his participation as a creator. In this context, Creator Shin Won-ho said, “It was my first time creating a drama from a new position, not from the directing position, so it took some time to get used to the role. It’s a role I’m trying for the first time, and expanding the universe is also a first-time experience for me, but Director Lee Min-soo and writer Kim Song-hee, among other production staff, have been incredibly supportive, so I am very satisfied.”
“Resident Playbook” is particularly garnering high interest from fans of the “Playlist” series as it is the first spinoff of “Hospital Playlist.” “I was wondering what it would be like to expand the universe of the stories we have and broaden the visuals, and now we have the chance to cover another universe of ‘Hospital Playlist’.” He explained the motivation for the project and added, “We prepared the spinoff with the goal of creating a new story that carries the same color.”
He explained the difference by saying, “Given that the symbol of ‘Hospital Playlist’ is Yulje Hospital, we aimed to provide a sense of unity while moving the location to the Jongno branch, which feels similar yet gives a completely different vibe.” He noted that the story focuses on graduating residents at the center of the narrative who can simultaneously tackle the topics related to obstetrics and gynecology, as well as the experiences previously covered in the ‘Hospital Playlist’ series.
Recently, Creator Shin Won-ho noted, “It seems that we cannot see growth narratives in reality either.” He explained, “When watching the series, residents experience mistakes and struggles just like first-year employees in any other workplace, and their journey won’t be smooth. The process of changing mindsets as small conflicts and worries accumulate will be depicted in the story. When expressing the relationships and attitudes toward the profession of residents, the term ‘initial struggles’ fits perfectly. I think viewers will enjoy watching knowing these characters will eventually come to love this work.”
In addition, he expressed satisfaction regarding the actors who will portray this growth narrative, catching attention. “The cast, including Go Youn-jung (as Oh Yi-young), Shin Si A (as Pyo Nam-gyeong), Kang Yoo-seok (as Eom Jae-il), Han Ye-ji (as Kim Sa-bi), and Jung Joon-won (as Goo Do-won) has been impressive. I hope this opportunity showcases how charming and talented these individuals are,” he praised, expressing anticipation to work with the actors.
Lastly, Creator Shin Won-ho highlighted the key point of observing “Resident Playbook,” saying, “It’s a story about all new beginnings, including friends starting their first jobs and babies just born into the world. I hope viewers can cry, laugh, and share emotions together as they watch these different characters grow through their initial struggles.”
