Miss Korea alumna Kang Joo-eun revealed her love story with actor Choi Min-soo.
On the 15th, a video titled "30 Years of Tiger Training vs. 30 Years Thrown Away (feat. Kang Joo-eun)" was uploaded to the 'Kkondaehee' channel.
That day, Kang Joo-eun asked, "Aren't you a Miss Korea alum? Back then, wasn't it mostly recommended by beauty salon managers?" to which she replied, "I know very well. I didn't have a manager and I wasn't starting in Korea, but I came from Canada. Since it wasn't a place with many Koreans, there were 15 candidates there. It was a small pageant in Canada. I never thought I would become the winner. It was completely unplanned. Then I had to go back to Korea. I was representing Canada in the Miss Korea pageant. Upon arriving here, just like I mentioned earlier, all the Miss Korea candidates came out as teams from beauty salons," she recounted the situation at that time.
He said, "But I'm the only one without anything. Most of them have it all. They have several wigs. So I said I would just go in with my own hair, but they said I couldn't. They said I needed to have a wig, so they gave me a leftover wig. When I went out, my husband was escorting the last 8 candidates while singing on stage. I didn't know who this person was. I had never watched Korean broadcasts in Canada. I was studying and attending school. It was during my college years. So when I came to the pageant with 51 candidates, everyone was freaking out because this man had arrived. There was a rehearsal. During that rehearsal, this man was showing off while on stage. I was wondering, who is that? So I just sat and watched. He looked busy and was frowning," she recalled her first impression.
She continued, "He is a famous person. But I had no idea what he was famous for. I had no clue at all. When I was leaving backstage after having spent two weeks getting close to him, I was feeling attached and went to greet him, but everyone was telling us to hurry up because it was over. As I was greeting him while heading backstage, I saw that he was testing the microphone in an Andre Kim tuxedo. As I was walking toward him, my husband said he could hear my voice from a distance. I noticed that this guy didn't even make it into the top 8, yet he was so bright and cheerful while greeting and smiling. I thought it was intriguing. I was passing backstage and he said, 'You worked hard today.' So I responded and shook hands with him. My husband shook hands and left from there. But my husband thought to himself at that moment, who is this? I have to meet them again," she explained.
Kang Joo-eun said, "The following week, if I was leaving on Saturday, I received a call from MBC on Friday. The producer wanted to guide me and show me MBC. So I went. The day before leaving, my husband was filming 'The Sea of Mom.' While filming, suddenly the producer introduced us. During the introduction, my husband was showing off even at that moment. He wasn't looking at me and was tousling his hair. I didn't even know who this person was, and I extended my hand to say hello. Since I had already shaken hands backstage that day, he looked at my hand and then saw me. He asked if I was the person he met backstage during the pageant. I confirmed that I was the one who sang that day and then we parted ways," she disclosed.
He said, "I asked the producer, what does this person do? I was told he acts here. So I wondered if I could at least get an autograph before leaving for Canada the next day as a keepsake. When I went out, I saw him giving interviews with reporters. So the producer said, 'Min-soo, could you please sign here?' But that guy suddenly told the reporters, 'I have something important right now, so I need to pause for a moment,' and suggested we go have coffee. I thought I asked for an autograph, but is it right to suggest coffee? So I followed him. Isn't there an MBC cafe in the basement? We talked for three hours in the cafe, and I was gesturing with my broken Korean and broken English. After three hours, he said, 'Let's get married.' This man," he revealed, shocking everyone.
Kang Joo-eun said, "When I looked into this man's eyes, I had a feeling that I would live looking at these eyes for the rest of my life. There was such a feeling. And at that time, I didn't even have time to think about how handsome he was. I just thought, was he a singer during Miss Korea? An actor? I was trying to get an autograph, but while we were having coffee and having conversations about life, suddenly the man talked about proposing. I wondered, what is this? Then we walked out together from MBC. But he held my hand while walking out. My husband gave me five phone numbers, saying I had to definitely call before leaving tomorrow, listing whose number and whose number as he handed me all five and insisted I call," she mentioned.
She continued, "I didn't make the call. I thought, does this make sense? Who suddenly meets someone and does that? So the next day, when I went to Gimpo Airport, that man showed up. It was the same way he walked on stage. From a distance, I thought, no way he came all the way here? But when I looked up the escalator, I saw him coming up with a box. He was carrying the box up, and while standing on the escalator, my husband looked at me and asked why I didn't call. He said he waited so long and that he had collected photos all night in that box. At that time, there was no social media, so he gathered all the photos and had written details about his dog and his parents, compiling everything overnight. He wanted me to get to know him during the 17-hour flight," she revealed, eliciting surprise.
He said, "He brought that along. He had written a letter on a small piece of paper that said, 'Today is our birthday; today is the day we became one. Can Joo-eun live for her brother from now on?' When I saw that, I thought, who am I living for? I've never heard such a frightening thing. It's hard enough to live for myself, so for whom? Is this for real? As I slowly read it, it said, 'Can you live for yourself?' How burdensome is that to say? What are you expecting? Just because we've met a few times?" he expressed his disbelief.
She added, "Since then, Choi Min-soo flew to Canada four consecutive weekends on a 17-hour flight to have lunch with my parents and then flew back on a 17-hour flight. Since he was filming 'The Sea of Mom.' I was happy to see my parents so joyful and happy communicating with a stranger. I thought, is there such a person my parents like? Could such a day happen? Honestly, I fell for that sight. My parents were happily treating him like he was the son they never had. That was the first time I had seen that. It became the reason why just six months later, we had an engagement ceremony in Canada and six months later we had a formal wedding in Korea," she revealed.
