Park Eun-bin and Sul KyungGu, whose hearts race only by meeting, have faced off as ‘rivals’ in a battle. ‘Hyper Knife’ showcases the flavor of a medical thriller where madness meets madness.
The Disney+ original series 'Hyper Knife' (directed by Kim Jeong-hyun, written by Kim Seon-hee, provided by Walt Disney Company Korea, produced by CJ ENM Studios, Vlad Studio, and Dongpung Corporation) is a medical thriller that depicts the fierce confrontation between the once-promising genius doctor 'Seo-ok' (played by Park Eun-bin) and her mentor 'Deok-hee' (played by Sul KyungGu), who drove her to ruin.
'Hyper Knife' had many reasons to anticipate viewer expectations even before its release. This being Disney+'s first attempt at a medical thriller is one, and the fact that Sul KyungGu, after 32 years of debut, is challenging the role of a doctor for the first time, alongside Park Eun-bin, who left a fresh image in recent works such as 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo' and 'The Diva of the Deserted Island', heightens the curiosity of prospective viewers as they come together in a thriller, especially in a love-hate mentor-student relationship.
The genius doctor Seo-ok, who is obsessively focused on 'my own' obsession, claims to be the favorite disciple of the world's best neurosurgeon, Deok-hee. While Deok-hee feels a sense of kinship and affection for Seo-ok, who resembles his younger self, he also becomes wary of Seo-ok's excessive obsession with surgery and ultimately harshly rejects him.
Seo-ok feels great betrayal and anger towards Deok-hee, who took away the opportunity for surgery that was 'my own,' and after losing her medical license, she continues her life as a shadow doctor to carry on the 'surgery' that she loves the most. Six years later, Deok-hee comes to find Seo-ok on his own and asks her for his brain surgery. Seo-ok, who does not show mercy to the one who took away 'my own,' entrusts Deok-hee with his life. What direction will the entangled relationship between the two take?
The most eye-catching aspect of the story is undoubtedly Seo-ok, played by Park Eun-bin. The unpredictable presence of 'Seo-ok,' who could leap anywhere, slightly twists the grammar of a typical thriller and adds thrill and tension in unexpected moments. Even though the character is close to a 'villain' who does not shy away from violence for her desires, Park Eun-bin's performance enhances the character's persuasion and adds to her charm.
The chemistry and narrative between Sul KyungGu and Park Eun-bin as 'rivals' are also points to watch. The narrative that Seo-ok and Deok-hee can only engage in a 'love-hate' relationship emerges somewhat quickly. However, the weighty charisma of Sul KyungGu, known for his strong acting skills, combined with the unrestrained madness of Park Eun-bin creates enough conflict to drive the story and strengthen its impact.
