The 4th episode of Channel A's weekend drama 'Witch,' broadcast on 23rd, marked the beginning of Dong-jin's (Park Jin-young) life-risking journey to prove that Mi-jeong (Noh Jeong-hee) is not a witch. Dong-jin realized that the report he wrote to disprove the existence of witches instead contained a statistical error that labeled her as one, causing him to face multiple frustrations as he sought solutions. However, after the death of his mother Mi-sook (Jang Hae-jin), he gathered his resolve again. Mi-sook, tormented by the guilt of having driven Mi-jeong out of their neighborhood, read Dong-jin's error-ridden report over and over again, believing firmly that Mi-jeong is not a witch. For the sake of such a mother, Mi-jeong had to absolutely not be a witch.
Promising data miner Dong-jin even quit his job to stay close to Mi-jeong. His goal was to analyze the patterns of events surrounding her and predict risks to prevent further harm. In the process, Dong-jin's meticulous care revealed another touching point of the day's broadcast. He repaired a dying streetlight to illuminate the dark night street for Mi-jeong, who only ventured out to feed stray cats during the least populated hours.
Dong-jin also painfully realized that not all answers in the world can be found through numbers alone. Previously, a suspect who destroyed Dong-jin's car was identified. It was Jung-ho (Jeong Ui-gap), a factory owner who suffered due to the bank loan algorithm Dong-jin created for small and medium enterprises. Due to changes in bank regulations, the loan that had been approved was revoked, leading to bankruptcy, and his family was thrown out on the street overnight. This was a harsh reality lesson that unintended victims can emerge from statistical errors.
Dong-jin did not turn a blind eye to that pain. Therefore, he accepted Jung-ho's anger, which included not only a terrorist act against his car but also physical attacks, without resistance. He then offered a heartfelt apology and bought warm food for Jung-ho, who was starving, while also meeting Chairman Lee (Jeon Guk-hwan) to request that Jung-ho be allowed to work in the casino, even in a small capacity.
Chairman Lee saw through Dong-jin’s good intentions to save lives, which is rare in today's world where people show little interest unless it concerns them. Earlier, Dong-jin had extracted big data for Chairman Lee's ongoing operations of the casino, but he ultimately proposed ways to rescue those who become lost souls at the casino. Thus, Dong-jin's struggle stemmed not merely from his feelings for Mi-jeong but from a goodwill to save others in pain.
And that great goodwill sprouted a hope that it could lift Mi-jeong's curse. Mi-jeong still lived trapped in a small rooftop room, which was her entire world. With the help of her only friend and a broadcasting station producer, Eun-sil (Jang Hee-ryeong), she maintained her livelihood through translation work. Looking at the scarecrows of her mother and father who protect that place, she comforted herself, saying it was okay, but the loneliness of not meeting anyone was inescapable. A small hope was what kept Mi-jeong alive. She wished to go to Hallstatt, a small village in Austria, which is not an island but calm and sparsely populated, carrying the hope that perhaps she could change there.
And perhaps that hope was already closer than she knew. Watching Mi-jeong, who had lost her everyday life like a fairy tale character trapped in a castle by a curse, Dong-jin vowed to find a way. To extract data sorely lacking to find answers to the errors, he headed to his hometown, Taebaek, where the incidents originated. He then convened his classmates and entered the storage room where school materials were kept. Dong-jin's determination to extract what he needed excited curiosity about whether he could discover a clue to lift Mi-jeong's curse in the next episode.
