The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 4th that it will hold a 'Korean traditional music week' to highlight the value of Korean traditional music and host various events for the public to enjoy until the 30th of this month.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism established June 5 as 'Korean Traditional Music Day' alongside the enactment of the 'Korean Traditional Music Promotion Act.' Korean Traditional Music Day was set to commemorate the first record of 'Yeominrak,' which means 'enjoying together with the public,' in the Sejong Sillok (Veritable Records of King Sejong During the Chosun Dynasty: 1454) on June 5 of the 29th year of Sejong (lunar calendar).
On Korean Traditional Music Day, performances and events will be held at Gwanghwamun Square, the courtyard inside the Heungnyemun Gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace, and the Geunjeongjeon Hall. A proclamation of 'the 1st Korean Traditional Music Day' will take place at the outdoor plaza of Heungnyemun Gate, where a ceremony will be held to honor individuals who contributed to the enactment of the 'Korean Traditional Music Promotion Act' with awards from the Minister. This ceremony will be broadcast live nationwide through Korean Traditional Music Broadcasting.
To commemorate the Korean Traditional Music Week, which runs from the 5th to the 30th, a commemorative performance 'Sejong's Royal Banquet' will take place at Geunjeongjeon Hall, and the 'Yeominrak Grand Festival,' consisting of six regional folk music activities, special performances, and hands-on experiences, will be held at Gwanghwamun Square. Various performances, educational and experiential events, academic conferences, and meetings hosted by Korean traditional music centers and cultural foundations can be found nationwide.
Minister Yoo In-chon said, 'I hope that through Korean Traditional Music Day, we can shine a new light on the meaning and value of Korean traditional music and that not only those in the traditional music community but also all citizens who love it will be interested in the preservation, promotion, and expansion of Korean traditional music.'
