As OpenAI's Studio Ghibli animation style photo transformation is trending worldwide, the methods of utilizing these images vary by generation, according to a survey conducted on the 2nd.

According to a report on the results of an online survey about generative artificial intelligence (AI) published in the latest issue of the Korea Press Foundation's 'Media Survey,' 59.5% of generative AI users in Korea have had experiences converting photos into images using generative AI.

Among those who used the image conversion feature, 52.4% actively utilized the images as social network service (SNS) or messenger profiles, or shared them with acquaintances. Meanwhile, 30.9% stored or saved the converted images personally.

Looking at it by age group, the highest percentage of those using images as SNS or messenger profiles was in the 60s, at 32.8%. In contrast, the lowest was in the 20s at 19.6%.

On the other hand, the percentage of those who stored or saved the images personally was highest among those in their 20s at 37.7%. Conversely, it was lowest in the 60s at 20.7%. This analysis was conducted by focusing on those who used the image conversion feature of generative AI.

Regardless of whether they used generative AI, when the entire age group was assumed as the population, the percentage of those who used images converted by generative AI as profile pictures was highest in their 20s at 17.1%. This was followed by those in their 30s at 16.3%, 40s at 10.7%, 50s at 6.5%, and 60s at 3.4%, indicating a decrease in percentage as age increased.

It was found that 57.2% of those with experience using generative AI in the last month. Among them, 37.0% started using generative AI within the last month. In this regard, the Korea Press Foundation noted, "The sharp increase in generative AI usage within one month is presumed to be influenced by the recent issue of 'Ghibli-style' image transformation."

When asked about the purposes (multiple responses) of using generative AI, information retrieval was the most common at 81%. This was followed by ▲writing and editing at 51.1% ▲photo and image generation and correction at 51.0% ▲foreign language translation at 42.1%. Analyzing the percentage of those who used AI for writing or editing by age group revealed that those in their 20s were highest at 68.3%, followed by those in their 30s at 60.0%, 40s at 48.3%, 50s at 37.6%, and 60s at 29.3%.

The Korea Press Foundation analyzed that the higher percentage of younger individuals utilizing generative AI for writing could be related to increased pressure in the writing process or changes in literacy levels.

Meanwhile, this survey was conducted online by the Korea Press Foundation's Media Research Center from the 17th to the 21st of last month. OpenAI unveiled its new image generation AI model, 'ChatGPT-4o Image Generation,' at the end of March. Since the model's release, image creation imitating the style of Japan's renowned animation studio 'Ghibli' has become a global trend.
