Director Bong Joon-ho's Hollywood film "Mickey 17" has gone to online streaming platforms a month after its theatrical release amid losses.

According to the new releases list of Amazon Prime Video in the United States on June 6 (local time), "Mickey 17" will be available on this platform on July 7 at 9 p.m. (U.S. Pacific time). Additionally, it will also be accessible on other streaming platforms such as Apple TV and Fandango.

According to the U.S. box office tracking site Box Office Mojo, "Mickey 17" has seen a gradual decline in the number of theaters since its debut in 3,807 North American cinemas on the 7th of last month, generating $44.68 million (about 65.3 billion won) in ticket sales in North America and $77.70 million (about 113.6 billion won) in other regions, for a total revenue of $122.38 million (about 178.9 billion won).

In South Korea, the cumulative audience as of the 6th based on the integrated ticketing system was 2,998,372, with cumulative revenue of about 29.6 billion won, falling short of expectations.

"Mickey 17" reportedly had a production expense of $118 million (about 170 billion won) excluding marketing and promotional costs. It is said that the film's investor and distributor, Warner Brothers, invested an additional $80 million (about 116.9 billion won) for marketing costs.

Considering the revenue sharing with theaters, the break-even point for ticket sales of "Mickey 17" is estimated to be around $300 million (about 438.5 billion won).

Industry analysts estimate that the global ticket sales for "Mickey 17" will be approximately $143 million (about 209 billion won). In this case, the film's loss could reach about $80 million (about 116.9 billion won).

Recently, many films have been unable to turn a profit solely from box office sales and are making up for losses through TV and streaming platform sales. However, because box office performance usually influences the contract amounts with streaming companies, it is expected that resolving the deficit for "Mickey 17" will not be easy.

Starring Hollywood star Robert Pattinson, "Mickey 17" received a relatively low rating of "B" in a CinemaScore survey conducted with audiences shortly after its release.

Additionally, as of this date, on the U.S. movie and drama rating site Rotten Tomatoes, it recorded a critic score of 77 (77% based on a perfect score of 100) and an audience score of 73.

These scores are significantly lower than those of Director Bong's previous works, including "Parasite" (critics 99, audiences 95), "Mother" (critics 96, audiences 89), and "Memories of Murder" (critics 95, audiences 92).

"Mickey 17" is a new film released five years after Bong won four Academy Awards (Oscars) for "Parasite" in 2020, and it garnered great interest in Hollywood as it was ambitiously invested in and distributed by the large corporation Warner Brothers.
